When the Carolina Panthers selected Bryce Young with the No. 1 overall pick in 2023, expectations were sky-high. But for the young quarterback, the road to NFL stardom has been anything but smooth.
Young's rookie season was a trial by fire. Playing behind a porous offensive line on a 2-15 team, he was sacked a staggering 62 times. The pressure was relentless, and his play often looked hesitant and uncertain.
His sophomore campaign started even worse. After two games with zero touchdowns and three interceptions—while the Panthers were outscored 71-13—the "bust" chatter grew deafening. Head coach Dave Canales made the tough call to bench Young in favor of veteran Andy Dalton.
But here's where the story turns. Instead of sulking or retreating, Young stayed engaged. He remained a vocal presence in the locker room, continued to study, and never stopped leading. When he reclaimed the starting job midway through the season, he finished with a respectable 54.0 QB rating, ranking 20th among NFL signal-callers.
Last season, the hard work paid off. Young set career highs in nearly every statistical category and guided the Panthers to an 8-9 record—and their first NFC South championship since 2017. Not bad for a quarterback many had already written off.
Now, entering his fourth season, the buzz is building once again. NFL analyst and former wide receiver Isaiah Stanback recently appeared on NFL Network's "Good Morning Football" and predicted Young is poised to make a massive leap in 2026.
"He's now acclimated to this Dave Canales system," Stanback said. "You talk about somebody who has continually improved his game. He's been through it—starter, benched, earned the job back. That builds character."
Canales agrees. "He revealed a lot about his character in that process and showed great leadership," the coach told The Charlotte Post. "He stayed in front of the team. He did not take a seat in the back. He continued to lead."
At just 5-foot-10, Young has always had to prove doubters wrong. But with a system he now commands, a team that believes in him, and a resilience forged through adversity, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner might just be ready to deliver the breakout season everyone has been waiting for.
