The Orlando Magic have officially entered the coaching market, and the buzz around their vacancy is already heating up. After parting ways with Jamahl Mosley—who led the team to three straight playoff appearances but stumbled in a disappointing first-round exit to the Detroit Pistons—the franchise is now looking for a fresh voice to guide its talented young core. And according to early betting markets on Kalshi, one name is emerging as the clear frontrunner: Billy Donovan.
Donovan, who recently stepped away from a rebuilding situation in Chicago, is drawing heavy action as the favorite to land the Orlando job. It's a move that would bring him full circle in a way—he famously left the Florida Gators (just a short drive from Orlando) back in 2007 after winning two national championships, only to briefly reconsider and return to college. Now, with the Magic boasting a roster packed with high-upside talent, the timing might finally be right.
Why is Orlando such an attractive destination? Simply put, this is the most promising opening among the three current NBA head coach vacancies. The Magic have a young, dynamic core led by 2022 No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero, alongside Desmond Bane, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs, and Wendell Carter Jr.—all under contract through at least next season. After years of rebuilding, the franchise is ready to compete, and the next coach will inherit a roster built to win now.
Magic team president Jeff Weltman, who signed a contract extension earlier this season, will lead the search. He emphasized that the team isn't looking for a specific "type" of coach, but rather someone who understands the team's timeline and can help them take the next step. "Coaches come in a lot of different shapes and sizes," Weltman told the Orlando Sentinel. "Someone who looks at our team and feels they can help move us forward."
While the Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Pelicans have a head start in their searches, the Magic job is widely considered the most desirable. Donovan currently leads the Kalshi market by a wide margin, but other candidates are sure to emerge as the process unfolds. For now, all eyes are on Orlando as they look to turn potential into results.
