Newcastle United’s plans for the upcoming transfer window, following a season that has exposed gaps across the squad, are coming to light.
A run of inconsistent results has left the club outside the European places, prompting internal discussions over where improvements are required ahead of next term, and now we seem to know which positions the Magpies will prioritize next summer.
According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, last summer’s disastrous recruiting has played a role in shaping the next plans, as Newcastle spent heavily across multiple positions, but several of the top-dollar signings never delivered the expected outcomes.
Offensive improvements are glaringly needed as the forward line, particularly at the striker position, has been a steady concern. On top of that, goalkeeping also remains an area without a clear long-term solution, mostly because the Magpies have an old man and a loaned-in dude set to depart this season.
“Newcastle’s priorities this summer are a striker and a goalkeeper,” Downie reported on Thursday.
Downie outlines a growing feeling internally that another forward addition is required to improve the team, particularly after last summer’s signings of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa backfired massively, with both struggling to establish themselves.
A goalkeeper is also expected to be targeted, with the club still searching for a long-term replacement for Nick Pope, and with Aaron Ramsdale nothing but gone.
Newcastle’s ability to complete those deals, however, will depend on outgoing transfers, with interest building in several high-value players and a few starters set to leave the organization.
