Newcastle United have set their sights on Monaco's midfield dynamo Lamine Camara, with French outlet L'Equipe reporting the Magpies' long-standing interest in the Senegal international. As the summer transfer window approaches, St James' Park could be the perfect stage for the 21-year-old to make his mark.

The Geordies are in desperate need of a holding midfielder who can dictate the tempo while offering rock-solid defensive cover—and Camara fits the profile like a glove. With Sandro Tonali's future at the club uncertain amid interest from several top European sides, the timing couldn't be better for Newcastle to strike.

Camara would be the ideal replacement for the Italian. Stationed at the base of midfield, he would allow Bruno Guimaraes to roam forward with freedom, unlocking a more dynamic attacking threat. Even if Newcastle manage to retain Tonali alongside Guimaraes, Camara could breathe new life into a midfield that has struggled to find consistency from Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey.

What sets Camara apart is his relentless ability to win back possession and drive the ball forward with purpose. He's a master of the dirty work that often goes unnoticed but wins games. His pedigree is undeniable—he played a pivotal role in Senegal's African Cup of Nations triumph just months ago, adding to a glittering trophy cabinet that includes the CHAN and U-20 Africa Cup of Nations titles in 2023, where he was named Player of the Tournament in both competitions.

His rise has been meteoric. After joining FC Metz in Ligue 2 in February 2023, he earned a swift move to Monaco and capped it off by being named CAF Young Player of the Year in January 2024. Interestingly, he shares roots with Liverpool legend Sadio Mane, both emerging from the famed Generation Foot academy before progressing through Metz.

However, Newcastle aren't alone in the hunt. Liverpool are reportedly considering a bid, adding pressure to the Magpies' pursuit. But this is a race worth winning. Eddie Howe's side thrives on overpowering opponents, but they've lacked control in midfield this season. Camara brings the perfect blend of energy and composure—exactly what the engine room has been crying out for.
