Newcastle United are setting their sights on a major goalkeeping overhaul this summer, with Manchester City's James Trafford emerging as their top priority for the second year running. According to a report from The Telegraph's Luke Edwards, the Magpies have already compiled a shortlist of targets, and the 23-year-old shot-stopper sits firmly at the top.
The need for a new No. 1 has become increasingly clear at St. James' Park. Current options Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale—the latter on loan—have both struggled with consistency this season, with costly errors and shaky performances raising red flags behind the scenes. Newcastle are now looking for a goalkeeper who can either challenge for or outright claim the starting role.
Trafford is viewed as the standout candidate, with Edwards noting that the club still believes he possesses "the complete package" and has the potential to develop into England's future first-choice goalkeeper. It's a bold ambition, but one that reflects the high regard Newcastle hold for the young talent.
However, securing his signature won't be easy. Newcastle have already failed twice to land Trafford, most recently when Manchester City triggered a buyback clause to bring him back from Burnley. And the Premier League champions aren't about to let him go cheaply. "Trafford would appear to be the early favourite," Edwards reported, but the path is anything but clear.
One major hurdle is salary. Trafford is reportedly earning well over £100,000 per week at City, a figure that would require significant adjustments within Newcastle's wage structure—or a substantial pay cut from the player himself to make the move to Tyneside possible.
To make matters more complicated, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Aston Villa are all monitoring the situation, meaning the Geordies face stiff competition. Despite this, Newcastle believe Trafford is open to joining, which he reportedly was before City swooped in with a last-minute counter-offer. Still, after that failed attempt, the club remains cautious but hopeful.
