Newcastle United find themselves in a potential transfer tug-of-war over star winger Anthony Gordon, with German powerhouse Bayern Munich circling and the player reportedly keen on a move to the Bundesliga. The Magpies have placed a hefty £75 million price tag on the England international, but Bayern are digging in their heels and refusing to go beyond £60 million—a gap that could force Newcastle into a tough corner.
Former chief scout Mick Brown, speaking to Football Insider, painted a picture of a delicate standoff. "Newcastle could be in a tricky position with Gordon," Brown explained. "It seems like he wants to join Bayern Munich and they're happy to let him go, but their asking price at the moment is going to be high." The real issue, as Brown sees it, is leverage—or the lack of it. With Bayern as the only serious bidder, Newcastle lack the bargaining power to drive up the price. Gordon still has two years left on his contract, but if the player's heart is set on Germany and no other clubs enter the race, the Magpies may have to swallow a discount.
"The problem is, if Bayern don't want to meet that asking price, but Gordon wants to make that move and isn't interested in looking elsewhere, it might have to change," Brown added. "A lot could depend on who else is interested. If someone like Liverpool wants to make a move then that asking price is more likely to be met." He warned that if Bayern remain the sole contenders, Newcastle could be left with an unhappy player or forced to accept a cut-price deal—a scenario that echoes last summer's Alexander Isak saga, but with a different outcome.
However, there's a silver lining for Newcastle fans. Rumblings of interest from Premier League giants Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea, as well as Spanish heavyweights Barcelona, suggest Gordon's future might not be decided in Munich alone. If a bidding war erupts, that £75 million valuation could suddenly look very achievable.
