Newcastle United delivered a commanding performance at St. James’ Park on Saturday, defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 and delivering a significant blow to the Seagulls' hopes of securing European football next season.

The visitors started brightly, almost catching the Magpies napping within the first two minutes. Goalkeeper Nick Pope was forced into an early save to deny Jack Hinshelwood, before Carlos Baleba rattled the woodwork with a powerful strike from distance. It was a warning shot that Newcastle heeded well.

As the half progressed, the home side began to find their rhythm. William Osula fired just wide in the 11th minute, but he wouldn't have to wait long for redemption. Just a minute later, Bruno Guimaraes threaded a brilliant through ball that drew Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen off his line. Jacob Murphy latched onto the pass and unselfishly squared it for Osula, who headed into an empty net to give Newcastle a deserved lead.

The Magpies doubled their advantage in the 24th minute, and it was a moment to remember for Dan Burn. On his 150th Premier League appearance, the towering defender rose highest to head home Guimaraes' corner, sending the St. James' Park faithful into raptures.

Newcastle nearly gifted Brighton a way back into the game moments later when Pope's clearance struck Hinshelwood and ricocheted off the post. At the other end, Joe Willock was denied by Verbruggen, before Sven Botman nodded Lewis Miley's delivery across goal to Malick Thiaw. The defender's close-range effort was somehow kept out by Verbruggen, while Danny Welbeck headed wide at the other end as the half ended with Newcastle firmly in control.

Brighton came out with renewed purpose after the break, and Pope was called into action again to deny Kaoru Mitoma from close range. Hinshelwood then saw his header drift off target as the Seagulls pushed for a way back into the contest.

Their persistence paid off in the 61st minute when Hinshelwood atoned for his earlier miss, finishing smartly after Welbeck's delicate pass sliced through the Newcastle defense. The goal set up a tense finale, with Brighton sensing an equalizer. Pope produced a fine save to deny Charalampos Kostoulas' acrobatic effort, and Yankuba Minteh somehow squandered a glorious chance from six yards out when it seemed easier to score.

Those misses proved costly. Deep into stoppage time, Harvey Barnes put the result beyond doubt, finishing coolly after being found by Yoane Wissa to seal a vital three points for the Magpies. The victory keeps Newcastle's own European ambitions alive while leaving Brighton's dreams hanging by a thread.
