Darwin Núñez's whirlwind football career appears to be taking yet another dramatic turn, with reports suggesting the former Liverpool striker could be heading back to the Premier League. According to the Daily Star, both Chelsea and Newcastle United are monitoring the Uruguayan's situation after he confirmed his departure from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal—less than a year after leaving Anfield.

Few players in recent Premier League memory have been as captivating, as frustrating, or as difficult to define as Núñez. His time at Liverpool, where he arrived for a club-record £64 million in 2022, was a study in contradictions. While he was part of the squad that lifted the Premier League title, his goal tally never quite matched the hefty price tag. Yet, he was never dull—often delivering moments of brilliance, chaos, and unpredictability that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Liverpool eventually decided to "cut their losses" last summer, selling Núñez to Al Hilal for around £46 million. The move to Saudi Arabia promised a fresh start, but it has unraveled quickly. According to the Daily Star, Núñez started brightly in the Middle East but was squeezed out after Karim Benzema's arrival in January. Saudi Pro League rules, which allow only eight overseas players born before 2003 in a 25-man squad, made Núñez a casualty of squad construction rather than poor form. He hasn't played since February.

Now, the 26-year-old has reportedly reached an agreement with Al Hilal to leave at the end of the season—and the most intriguing detail? He could become a free agent if his contract is terminated. That changes everything. At £64 million, Núñez was a gamble. At no cost, he becomes one of the most tempting prospects on the market.

For Chelsea, who are rebuilding under Enzo Maresca and looking for a dynamic, physical presence up front, Núñez offers raw power and relentless energy. For Newcastle, Eddie Howe's side could use a striker who thrives on chaos and creates chances out of nothing—something Núñez does better than most. Both clubs have the ambition and the need for a player who, despite his flaws, remains one of football's most fascinating talents.

Núñez's career has always been restless, unpredictable, and full of what-ifs. A return to the Premier League—this time with a point to prove—could be the perfect next chapter.
