Newcastle United's frustrating season took another turn for the worse at the City Ground, as former Magpie Elliot Anderson struck an 88th-minute equalizer to snatch victory from Eddie Howe's side. It's a story that has become all too familiar for the black-and-white faithful, with late-game collapses once again proving their undoing.

The numbers paint a grim picture. Newcastle have now dropped points from a winning position a league-high 10 times this season. In 2026 alone, the Magpies have taken the lead against Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Brentford, and Liverpool—only to lose each of those matches. It's a pattern that must leave Howe and his coaching staff pulling their hair out.

When Newcastle go ahead in a Premier League match, they convert that lead into a victory just 56.5% of the time—13 wins from 23 opportunities. That's among the worst conversion rates in the division, sitting only marginally above Tottenham Hotspur (56.3%) and the relegation-threatened trio of West Ham United (52.9%), Wolverhampton Wanderers (50%), and Burnley (40%). The key difference? Those struggling sides have taken the lead far less often than Newcastle.

In fact, only the top three—Manchester City (30 times), Arsenal (28), and Manchester United (26)—have found themselves ahead more frequently than the Magpies, who have led 23 times, matching Liverpool's tally. But it's what happens after they take the lead that's the real problem.

Late goals have become Newcastle's Achilles' heel. Of the 52 goals they've conceded this Premier League season, 20 (a staggering 38.5%) have come from the 76th minute onward. No team has shipped more goals between the 76th and 90th minutes than Newcastle's 12, with Sunday's opponents Nottingham Forest close behind on 11. In stoppage time, the Magpies are joint-worst with eight goals conceded, level with Leeds United and already-relegated Burnley.

With two games remaining, the message is clear: even when Harvey Barnes fires home a 74th-minute winner, as he did against Forest, the game is far from over for Newcastle United. For fans, it's a nerve-wracking reality that even the most promising leads can slip through their fingers in the dying moments.
