The New York Yankees need to fix this problem before it gets any worse.

The New York Yankees have been riding a hot streak for weeks, but the cracks are starting to show. After dropping the first two games of a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Bronx Bombers now find themselves in unfamiliar territory: their first losing streak in quite some time.

Saturday night's loss was a gut-punch, and it exposed a problem that's been lurking beneath the surface. The Yankees carried a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning, only to see Brent Headrick and Camilo Doval each surrender a run. New York fought back to reclaim the lead in the 10th, but then things got weird. Fernando Cruz walked a batter and allowed a game-tying infield single. Then Tim Hill made a baffling decision to try for the lead runner at third on a routine ground ball. A sacrifice fly later, and the Brewers had stolen the win.

To be fair, Headrick and Hill have been stellar all season. But the bullpen's weak links are becoming impossible to ignore. Doval's ERA sits at a bloated 6.14, and while David Bednar turned in a clean inning on Saturday, he's been walking a tightrope all year. The reality is that the Yankees don't have a single shutdown arm in their bullpen right now.

This was a hole the front office largely ignored during the offseason. Letting Devin Williams and Luke Weaver walk was a calculated risk, but the team should have pushed harder for upgrades—or at least brought in reliable depth. Some are now calling for the promotion of Yovanny Cruz from Triple-A to inject some fresh life into the relief corps.

Whatever the solution, one thing is clear: it's hard to imagine the Yankees winning a World Series with this bullpen as currently constructed. But here's the silver lining—the Aug. 3 trade deadline is fast approaching. Expect Brian Cashman to be active, much like he was last summer when he added Bednar and Doval. The question is whether those moves will be enough to turn a glaring weakness into a postseason strength.
