New York Giants rookie guard Francis Mauigoa is already making an impression—and it's not just on the field. The first-round pick out of the University of Miami hit it off with veteran right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor during team physicals last week, and the chemistry is undeniable.
"He's a cool guy. We're excited about each other. Can't wait to move people," Mauigoa told reporters, summing up the duo's mindset in a way that should excite Giants fans.
Mauigoa is making the jump from right tackle in college to guard in the pros, but he's no stranger to versatility. During his time with the Hurricanes, he practiced at both guard and center in addition to his starting tackle role. That experience should help him adapt quickly to the tighter spaces and faster pace of interior line play in the NFL.
The Samoan-born lineman isn't going it alone, either. He's leaned on advice from a network of NFL veterans, including his brother Francisco "Kiko" Mauigoa (New York Jets), former Miami teammate Jalen Rivers (Cincinnati Bengals), and offseason work with veteran Jon Feliciano. Mauigoa says the main adjustments are the reduced space and quicker tempo, but he's confident he'll adapt fast.
He also had high praise for head coach John Harbaugh, describing him as an "old school" coach who demands hard work while keeping things professional and safe. That no-nonsense approach aligns perfectly with Mauigoa's humble, hard-working attitude.
With early chemistry already forming with veterans like Eluemunor, Mauigoa is poised to contribute right away. The Giants are looking to build a physical—dare we say "bully"—offensive line, and this rookie seems ready to help lead the charge.
