Newly released footage has shed light on the exact moment Los Angeles Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt suffered a gruesome hand injury during Game 1 of the NBA Western Conference semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The 27-year-old defensive specialist was forced to exit in the second quarter after a freak accident on a chase-down block attempt. Vanderbilt lunged to swat a fastbreak dunk by Chet Holmgren, but instead of meeting the ball, his right hand slammed into the backboard. The impact bent his right pinky finger at an unnatural angle, resulting in a full dislocation.
The injury was so severe that play was halted as teammates and opponents alike recoiled. Thunder players Jalen Williams and Jared McCain were among those on the bench who turned away after witnessing the dislocation up close.
Vanderbilt played just six minutes, finishing with two points on 1-of-2 shooting and one rebound. The Thunder cruised to a 108-90 victory, taking a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-seven matchup.
Now, the Lakers face an anxious wait for imaging results. If a fracture is confirmed, Vanderbilt could miss at least a month—potentially ending his 2026 postseason run. This would be a devastating blow for head coach JJ Redick, who has relied on Vanderbilt as a defensive anchor for the second unit all season. The 6'8" forward appeared in 65 games, averaging 4.4 points and 4.5 rebounds while using his length and athleticism to counter Oklahoma City's bruising frontcourt.
The Lakers enter this series already decimated by injuries. Luka Dončić, the team's best player, remains sidelined with a strained left hamstring. Los Angeles has yet to field a full-strength lineup this postseason, and Game 2 on Thursday at Paycom Center will test their depth even further.
