A second trial involving the medical team of Argentina football great Diego Maradona began on Tuesday, five and a half years after his death. Seven doctors and carers appeared in court in San Isidro north of Buenos Aires.

A new chapter in the tragic saga surrounding Diego Maradona's death has opened in Argentina, as a second trial against members of his medical team began this week. More than five years after the football legend's passing, seven doctors and caregivers faced court in San Isidro, north of Buenos Aires, accused of manslaughter in connection with his care.

The proceedings, expected to last for months with two hearing days per week, will hear from around 90 witnesses. Prosecutors allege that serious mistakes were made in the at-home care of the 1986 World Cup hero, leading to his fatal heart attack in November 2020 at age 60, just weeks after he underwent brain surgery.

Among the defendants are Maradona's personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, his psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachov, and several other medical professionals and caregivers, all of whom deny the allegations. If convicted, they could face prison sentences of up to 25 years. This trial follows a previous attempt that was declared null and void last year after a judge was suspended for involvement in an unauthorized documentary about the case.

For fans worldwide, the trial is a somber postscript to the life of one of football's most iconic and complex figures, a player whose genius on the pitch was often shadowed by personal struggles off it. The quest for accountability continues as the sports world watches this legal battle unfold.
