His arsenal certainly fits the bill. That's a classic late-inning combination.

But there's a catch. Valera has struggled to stay healthy as a starter. He missed three months last season with elbow soreness, and now this latest surgery raises serious questions about his durability. Since signing with the Red Sox for $45,000 as an international free agent in 2023, he's flashed undeniable promise—enough to rank as Boston's No. 4 prospect according to MLB.com—but he's been limited to just 138 professional innings. His changeup, graded at 50, gives him a starter's mix, but the health concerns may push the organization toward a bullpen role.
