In a masterful display of pitching and defense, the New Mexico Lobos shut out the UNLV Rebels 5-0 in the first elimination game of the loser's bracket at the 2026 Mountain West Softball Tournament. The victory sets up a highly anticipated rematch with top-seeded Grand Canyon University, as the Lobos look to keep their tournament hopes alive.
The game got off to a blazing start for New Mexico, as Yanina Sherwood—starting for UNLV in place of the overworked Lauren Fettic—surrendered a solo home run to the second batter she faced. Gabrielle Briones launched a rocket to put the Lobos up 1-0 in the first inning. UNLV managed to reach base on a Lobo error, but Caitlin Benningfield quickly extinguished any threat, striking out two batters in a row to keep the Rebels scoreless.
The Lobos kept the power surge going in the top of the second. Melanie Macias crushed a 220-foot homer to dead center field, bouncing off the top of the wall and clearing the yard to extend New Mexico's lead to 2-0. Benningfield, despite shouldering a heavy workload in the tournament, continued to dominate. She mowed down the Rebels in the bottom of the second with a quick three-and-out inning, adding two more strikeouts to her tally.
UNLV made a pitching change in the third inning, bringing in Fettic after Sherwood allowed another runner to reach on an error. Fettic responded with a sharp inning-ending double play. Benningfield answered with three straight groundouts, keeping UNLV off balance. The Rebels threatened briefly in the fourth when Diamond Sefe drew a four-pitch walk, but Benningfield calmly retired the next three batters to end the inning.
New Mexico capitalized on another UNLV error in the fifth, and after a lengthy review of a hit-by-pitch on Hayden Luderer, the Lobos loaded the bases. Bri Williams delivered a clutch RBI single to make it 3-0. Fettic managed to strand the remaining runners, but the damage was done. Benningfield, who had a no-hitter going into the fifth, saw her bid end on a double by Presley Barnes. However, she quickly regrouped, stranding Barnes and keeping the shutout intact.
The Lobos added two more runs in the later innings, sealing a dominant 5-0 victory. With this win, New Mexico advances to face top-seeded GCU in the loser's bracket final—a rematch that promises plenty of drama as the Lobos aim to continue their tournament run.
