According to Matt Hughes from The Guardian, a new FIFA proposal would allow domestic squads to play one match per season on international turf, with host countries having a maximum of five matches per season, opening the door to many interesting scenarios.

FC Barcelona were recently in the spotlight for trying to schedule a La Liga match against Villarreal, but they eventually canceled their plans after serious backlash, despite approval from several top bodies, including UEFA, to proceed.

It’s unclear what the effects of this proposal, which hasn’t been put in to place yet, will be for the future of the sport, especially in the United States, a place of intrigue and opportunity for European clubs to spread their global footprint, even though the U.S. has a strong domestic league of their own.

On one hand, this move could increase access to top-tier football to several countries that lack the infrastructure to succeed at the domestic level. However, questions remain regarding player travel and health, ticket pricing, and a possible decrease in the domestic connections teams have with their cities and nearby areas in exchange for financial gain.

What is clear though is that fans throughout Europe, and many players, are against the idea of domestic competitions occurring on foreign soil; FIFA seems like it’s coming closer and closer to standardizing the process.
