The London Marathon continues to break barriers, setting a new world record for ballot applications for the 2027 event. Scheduled for April 25, the iconic race has drawn an astounding 1,338,544 hopefuls—shattering last year's record of 1,133,813. This surge underscores the marathon's unparalleled global appeal, with over a million applications coming from the UK alone for the first time, and near-equal numbers of male and female registrants.

Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events, called the numbers "astonishing," noting that "nothing else comes close" in establishing London as the world's most sought-after marathon. The event's mission to inspire people of all ages and abilities is clearly resonating, as the 2026 edition already set records with 59,830 finishers and was the largest annual one-day fundraising event globally.

Ballot results will be released in early July through a random draw, offering a chance to join a race that has recently witnessed historic feats. At last weekend's event, Kenya's Sabastian Sawe achieved the first sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race, while Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa broke her own women's world record. Organizers are also exploring the possibility of expanding the 2027 marathon across two days—Saturday and Sunday—to accommodate the growing demand.

Whether you're a seasoned runner or dreaming of your first 26.2 miles, the London Marathon's record-breaking interest is a testament to the power of sport to unite and inspire. For those gearing up for race day, the right gear can make all the difference—stay tuned for tips on training and apparel to help you cross that finish line.
