On Thursday, the Nets announced the promotion of Makar Gevorkian to assistant general manager. Gevorkian, who previously served as vice president of basketball operations and strategic planning for the past two seasons, has been climbing the ranks in Brooklyn since joining as a basketball operations assistant back in 2020. His steady rise reflects a keen understanding of the game and the business side of the league.
“Makar’s strategic, forward-thinking mind, along with his comprehensive knowledge of the league’s salary cap structure, have made him a valued voice within our front office,” said Nets general manager Sean Marks in a statement. “We are excited to elevate him to this well-earned role.”
That salary cap expertise will be crucial for Brooklyn. The team is projected to free up nearly $50 million in cap space this offseason, depending on re-signings and extension talks with key players like forwards Michael Porter Jr. and Noah Clowney. Having Gevorkian’s sharp financial mind in the room could give the Nets the flexibility they need to make smart, creative moves as they look to bounce back.
But it’s not all good news in the front office. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Nets have lost a key talent evaluator: Acie Law has left Brooklyn to join the Chicago Bulls as their Vice President of Player Personnel. Law served as the Nets’ director of player personnel this past season, and prior to that, he held various scouting roles with the Sacramento Kings and Oklahoma City Thunder since 2018. His departure leaves a gap in Brooklyn’s scouting department at a critical time.
With the No. 6 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft after Sunday’s lottery, the Nets have a golden opportunity to add young talent. Between the draft, free agency, and a reshaped front office, this summer is shaping up to be a defining moment for the franchise.
