The Brooklyn Nets are still in the early stages of their offseason as they prepare to have a better season next year after ending the 2025-26 campaign with a lowly 20-62 record. As of now, Brooklyn is looking at some downtime, at least until the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery comes around on May. 10 and for the moment, general manager Sean Marks is free to discuss other topics.
"It's a great point. I don't know that there's real concern on my end. I think this is more about what a heck of an opportunity," Marks said to Ric Bucher and former NBA player Bostjan Nachbar on the "Fullcourt Passport" podcast when asked for his thoughts on NBA expansion. Bucher was specifically asking Marks whether the NBA trying to expand to Las Vegas, Seattle, and Europe at the same time is a good move for a league that's trying to continue its growth.
"What an opportunity for basketball, what an opportunity for the NBA. Whether it's expanding within the continental U.S. or whether it's through NBA Europe," Marks continued. "I think the biggest thing for me is going to be the development of these young men. How are they getting the development? The talent will rise, right? We'll find the talent."
What Marks, Bucher, and Nachbar were discussing was the NBA Board of Governors voting on Mar. 25 to approve exploration of expansion franchises in Seattle and Las Vegas, as per the league's official press release. While the aforementioned release didn't specify that the governors approved expansion into Europe, NBA commissioner Adam Silver did announce that the league will explore a potential league in Europe with FIBA being the partner.
The last time the NBA expanded was in 2004 with the addition of the Charlotte Bobcats after the Charlotte Hornets relocated to New Orleans in 2002. With so many unknowns remaining regarding what a 32-team NBA will look like, many people like Bucher are wondering if the league is trying to do too much at the same time. Marks, who has his own matters to attend to with Brooklyn's rebuild, doesn't seem too concerned about the expansion going poorly.
