NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. had the best season of his career in his first year with the Nets and as a result, fans are looking forward to what he can do next season. Given that Brooklyn is still in the early stages of its rebuild, Porter may be worth more to the franchise as a trade piece, but he explained his relationship with general manager Sean Marks.
"Either way, they can let me know what's going on or not. I have no hard feelings. I always feel grateful and blessed to be given an opportunity to play for a lot of money, and I think that Sean and them, they will be transparent with me," Porter said during his exit interview earlier this month. Porter is one of the players that will be in trade rumors this offseason, but it seems like Marks and the front office will be up front with him throughout the process.
"But I mean, I don't think that they owe me that, but I would obviously as a player, I would appreciate it and I would kind of like to know what they're thinking," Porter continued. "But things happen quick in the NBA. Deals come up and things move pretty fast, so just got to take it in stride and see what happens, I think."
Porter, 27, ended the 2025-26 NBA season with averages of 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point line. Porter achieved per-game career-highs in points and assists, but his shooting percentages were well behind his career-averages, showing how tough his job was as the primary scorer for a rebuilding Nets team.
Given that Porter looked like the kind of player that could help out teams looking to make a playoff run like the Detroit Pistons and Golden State Warriors, he stayed put after the February trade deadline. However, Porter is eligible for a contract extension this offseason and even if he extends his contract, time will tell if he will spend the rest of that deal in Brooklyn. Either way, it seems like Porter and Marks will be on the same page to some degree.
