The NFL is heading Down Under, and it's bringing one of the league's most heated rivalries with it. Netflix will broadcast the Week 1 showdown between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams from Melbourne, Australia, a source familiar with the plans told the Associated Press on Thursday.
This historic matchup kicks off the NFL's international series in Australia for the first time ever, adding a global twist to the NFC West rivalry. The game is scheduled for September 10 at 8:35 p.m. ET (5:35 p.m. PT) in the U.S., but for Australian fans, it'll be a morning affair—starting at 10:35 a.m. local time the next day, given Melbourne's 14-hour time difference from New York and 17-hour gap from the West Coast.
Reigning AP NFL MVP Matthew Stafford and the Rams will serve as the home team after splitting the season series with Brock Purdy's 49ers last year. This is just one of nine international games the NFL has planned for the upcoming season, marking a major expansion of the league's global footprint.
The NFL schedule is still being finalized, with an announcement expected next week. League officials are pushing to wrap it up by the weekend, just in time for network upfronts starting Monday—where showcase games are traditionally unveiled to advertisers.
Netflix, which has streamed Christmas Day games for the past two seasons, could also land games on the night before Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. The streamer is already set to air two more Christmas games this season. But for now, all eyes are on Melbourne, where the 49ers and Rams will kick off the NFL season in a whole new time zone.
