In a move that underscores the historic success of Nebraska men's basketball this season, head coach Fred Hoiberg has announced contract extensions for his key staff members. The team, fresh off its best season ever, is locking in the architects of that triumph.
Assistants Nate Loenser, Ernie Zeigler, and Pat Monaghan, along with general manager Luca Virgilio, have all signed new deals. Hoiberg, who was named the Associated Press national coach of the year, also promoted Loenser to associate head coach. Specific contract terms were not disclosed.
The Cornhuskers' breakthrough 2025-26 campaign was nothing short of spectacular. Finishing 28-7 overall and tied for second in the Big Ten with a 15-5 conference record, Nebraska made history by winning its first-ever NCAA Tournament game—a victory over Troy—before advancing to the Sweet 16 with a win against Vanderbilt. The team climbed to No. 14 in the final AP Top 25 poll.
"The success our program had this year is really a testament to the efforts of our entire staff, and it is important to reward them for all of their work," Hoiberg said. "The work they pour into our players is evident in their development in our program. Nate, Ernie, and Luca have been vital over the last four years in helping us build a winning culture and enjoy sustained success that Nebraska basketball has not seen in a long time."
Each assistant brings a specialized skill set to the program. Loenser, who just completed his fifth season on staff, coordinates the defense. Zeigler, a four-year veteran, works with the offense and plays a major role in game planning. Monaghan, who joined in April 2025, focuses on player development, game planning, and recruiting. Meanwhile, Virgilio—Hoiberg's right-hand man for all seven seasons at Nebraska—handles roster management and retention.
For fans looking to celebrate this historic season, it's a perfect time to gear up in Cornhuskers apparel. From Sweet 16 memorabilia to classic Nebraska gear, show your support for a program on the rise.
