Nebraska basketball is riding a wave of success, and the program is making sure its key architects are rewarded. On Tuesday, head coach Fred Hoiberg announced contract extensions for assistants Nate Loenser, Ernie Zeigler, Pat Monaghan, and general manager Luca Virgilio—a well-deserved move following the Cornhuskers' historic season.

This year, Nebraska achieved what no team before it could: a 28-7 overall record, a second-place finish in the Big Ten at 15-5, and a breakthrough NCAA Tournament run. The Cornhuskers notched their first-ever tournament victory by defeating Troy, then followed it up with a win over Vanderbilt to reach the Sweet 16. They finished the season ranked No. 14 in the final AP Top 25, cementing their place as a national contender.

Hoiberg, named the Associated Press National Coach of the Year, also promoted Loenser to associate head coach. Loenser, who coordinates the defense, just wrapped up his fifth season on staff. Zeigler, who handles offensive game planning, has been with the program for four seasons. Monaghan, who joined in April 2025, focuses on player development and recruiting. Virgilio, a seven-year veteran under Hoiberg, manages roster and retention.

"The success our program had this year is really a testament to the efforts of our entire staff, and it is important to reward them for all of their work," Hoiberg said. "The work they pour into our players is evident in their development in our program. Nate, Ernie, and Luca have been vital over the last four years in helping us build a winning culture and enjoy sustained success that Nebraska basketball has not seen in a long time."

While contract terms were not immediately announced, the extensions signal a commitment to keeping the band together. For fans and supporters, this is a sign that Nebraska's rise isn't a one-season wonder—it's a foundation built for lasting success. As the Cornhuskers look to build on their Sweet 16 run, having a stable, experienced coaching staff will be key to taking the next step.
