Near-perfect night gives Utah its 1st win of the season over BYU

Every once in a while, everything goes right for the University of Utah baseball team. It hasn’t been often this season, but it was the case Friday night as Jake Long, Jet Gilliam and Blake Eckerle hit home runs as the Utes whipped the BYU Cougars 8-1 in a Big 12 Conference game. Payton Riske allowed just four hits in five innings on the mound, and Demitri Diamant took advantage of several fine defensive plays as Utah salvaged the second game of the three-game series at Miller Park.

Every once in a while, everything falls perfectly into place for a baseball team. For the University of Utah Utes, that rare, magical night arrived on Friday—and it couldn't have come at a better time.

In a commanding 8-1 victory over rival BYU, the Utes showcased their full potential in a Big 12 Conference clash at Miller Park. The offense exploded with three home runs, courtesy of Jake Long, Jet Gilliam, and Blake Eckerle, while the pitching and defense were nearly flawless. It was the kind of performance that reminds everyone why baseball is such a captivating sport.

On the mound, Payton Riske was in control, scattering just four hits over five innings. Behind him, Demitri Diamant anchored a defense that turned several key plays, stifling any momentum BYU tried to build. The result? Utah's first win over the Cougars this season, snapping a four-game losing streak in the process.

"Nice of them to do that for us," joked Utah head coach Gary Henderson, referring to the fireworks show BYU had scheduled after the game. "We deserved it. This was as good as we've played all season."

The Utes wasted no time setting the tone. In the first inning, Long launched a one-out homer over the center-field fence, silencing the BYU crowd and staking Utah to an early 1-0 lead. After the Cougars tied it up, the Utes took control for good, with Gilliam and Eckerle adding their own long balls to the highlight reel.

Gilliam was particularly electric, collecting three hits in four at-bats. His only out came on a deep fly ball caught at the warning track. "I never know how it's going to play out. It's one pitch at a time," he said. The performance reminded him of a five-hit, two-homer game he had against Big 12 leader Kansas a month ago—but this one felt even sweeter, coming against Utah's fiercest rival.

The win carries major implications. Both teams are fighting for position in the Big 12 tournament, which begins May 19 in Surprise, Arizona. With the league taking the top 12 of its 16 teams, every victory matters. Utah improved to 22-19 overall and 10-13 in conference play, moving into ninth place. BYU dropped to 23-22 and 12-11, sitting in seventh.

The series finale is set for Saturday at 1 p.m., and both squads will be hungry for a win that could solidify their postseason hopes. For the Utes, Friday night was a reminder of what they're capable of when everything clicks. It's the kind of performance that can spark a late-season run—and the perfect inspiration for fans to gear up in their favorite Utah apparel.
