The NCAA has officially closed the book on a recruiting violation that has shadowed the Iowa Hawkeyes football program, vacating several wins from the Kirk Ferentz era. The final ruling, delivered on April 14, 2026, stems from impermissible contact made during the late-2022 recruitment of quarterback Cade McNamara.

Head Coach Kirk Ferentz had already accepted a self-imposed one-game suspension to start the 2024 season, a penalty he addressed with clear remorse nearly two years prior. "I tell our players we abide by the rules," Ferentz stated in August 2024. "In this specific case, I did not do that. I made a mistake."

While the NCAA agreed the suspensions for Ferentz and assistant Jon Budmayr were sufficient, it added a significant historical penalty: the vacation of all wins from games in which the ineligible McNamara participated. The former Michigan transfer started 13 games over two injury-plagued seasons in Iowa City, with the team posting a 9-4 record in those contests.
