March Madness is about to get even bigger. The NCAA Division I Board of Governors has officially voted to expand both the men’s and women’s tournaments to 76 teams, adding eight more spots to the current 68-team field. The change takes effect in 2027, giving fans and players alike more opportunities to experience the thrill of the big dance.
This expansion isn’t just about adding games—it’s a financial boost for member schools. According to the NCAA, the move will generate over $131 million in new revenue distributions over the remaining six years of their broadcast agreements. That’s a significant windfall for programs that might otherwise miss out on the tournament spotlight.
“Expanding the Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships is the right decision for the student-athletes and programs that will now have access to the greatest events in college sports,” said Tim Sands, president of Virginia Tech and chair of the Board of Directors, in a statement. “As NCAA leaders, we are especially excited to provide additional, highly competitive games for fans who look forward to March Madness every year.”
For those who love the bracket-busting chaos of March, the schedule remains largely intact. The men’s tournament will still kick off with the Round of 64 on the Thursday after Selection Sunday. What was once known as the “First Four” will now be rebranded as the “March Madness Opening Round.” This early-stage action will feature three games per day in each host city on the Tuesday and Wednesday following Selection Sunday. While Dayton, Ohio, will continue to be a staple venue, a second city is yet to be announced.
The Opening Round will include the 12 lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the 12 lowest-seeded at-large teams. To keep the competition fair, teams will be paired against the closest opponent on the committees’ overall seed lists, ensuring that all 76 tournament teams are properly seeded.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual viewer, this expansion means more Cinderella stories, more buzzer-beaters, and more chances to gear up in your favorite team’s apparel. Get ready for March Madness like never before.
