The 2027 men’s and women’s NCAA Tournaments have expanded to 76 teams.

The NCAA Tournament is getting a major makeover, and starting in 2027, March Madness will look a little different. The Division I men's and women's basketball committees have voted to expand the tournament field from 68 to 76 teams, a change that will take effect for the 2027 tournaments. This decision, reported by CBS Sports' Matt Norlander, marks the end of the beloved "First Four" era and introduces a new opening round format.

Here's how it will work: Instead of the First Four, we'll see a 24-team, 12-game "opening round" played over two days. Six games will tip off on the Tuesday after Selection Sunday, followed by six more on Wednesday. The 12 winners from these games will then join a 52-team bracket, creating a full 64-team field that kicks off the first round on Thursday and Friday as usual. In other words, 32% of the tournament field won't be in the main bracket when it's revealed on Selection Sunday.

While this expansion means more teams get a shot at the title, it also raises concerns about the quality of the bubble teams. Some squads that might have been among the "first four out" or even "next four out" in previous years will now sneak into the field, potentially diluting the competition. For fans who love the drama of the bubble, this could be a tough pill to swallow.

Whether you're stocking up on your favorite team's gear for the new-look tournament or just soaking in the madness, one thing is clear: March Madness is evolving, and we're all along for the ride. None of us asked for this, but it's happening anyway—so get ready for more games, more surprises, and more unforgettable moments.
