The Iowa Hawkeyes football program has been hit with NCAA sanctions for tampering violations related to the recruitment of former quarterback Cade McNamara. The penalties include vacating four wins from the 2023 season.
The NCAA announced on Tuesday that an investigation found head coach Kirk Ferentz and receivers coach Jon Budmayr had impermissible contact with McNamara before he officially entered the transfer portal from Michigan. This unauthorized communication, a clear breach of recruiting protocols, has resulted in significant consequences for the program.
As a direct result of the ruling, Iowa must vacate all four victories from the 2023 season in which McNamara started at quarterback. The program will also be placed on one year of probation. This serves as a stark reminder of the strict rules governing player transfers in college athletics.
In addition to the NCAA's penalties, the university has self-imposed several sanctions. These include a $25,000 fine, a two-week ban on all recruiting communications, and a reduction in official in-person recruiting days. Furthermore, both Coach Ferentz and Coach Budmayr have been suspended for the team's 2024 season opener.
McNamara's tenure at Iowa was marked by both promise and injury. He posted a 4-1 record as a starter in 2023 before a knee injury ended his season. After starting eight games in 2024, he transferred to FCS program East Tennessee State to use his final year of eligibility, leaving the Hawkeyes to deal with the aftermath of his recruitment.
