NC State captures needed series win over Miami

The Wolfpack move up 15 spots in the RPI rankings

In a pivotal weekend that could have made or broken their postseason hopes, NC State delivered when it mattered most. The Wolfpack secured a crucial home series victory over Miami, taking the final two games to breathe new life into their NCAA Regional at-large aspirations. The win was more than just a morale booster—it was a rankings game-changer. Entering Friday with an RPI in the low 50s, NC State vaulted an impressive 15 spots, landing in much safer territory. With a 3-3 finish in ACC play now looking likely, the Wolfpack have positioned themselves firmly in the at-large conversation.

The series opener and finale followed a similar script: both teams traded multi-run innings in a high-stakes slugfest. In game one, NC State found themselves staring at a 6-0 deficit early on. But this Wolfpack team has grit. They stormed back with an explosive 8-run fourth inning, followed by another run in the fifth, taking a three-run lead. The momentum, however, proved fleeting. Miami answered with a five-run seventh inning, highlighted by a go-ahead grand slam from Max Galvin. The Hurricanes' slugger was a menace all weekend, going 7-for-12 with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored, and six RBIs—while striking out just once.

Offensively, the Wolfpack showed plenty of fight in the opener, racking up 10 hits, drawing six walks, and getting hit by four pitches. Christian Serrano led the charge with a 3-for-5 performance, including a double and two runs scored. Chris McHugh also stood out, going 2-for-3 with a double, a run, two RBIs, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. The eight-run fourth inning was a team effort, featuring five hits, three walks, and two hit-by-pitches. After that, however, the bats went quiet. Still, eight different State hitters reached base multiple times. Rett Johnson (1-for-4, run, RBI, HBP), Luke Nixon (1-for-4, run, RBI, walk), Ty Head (0-for-3, run, RBI, walk, HBP), Sherman Johnson (1-for-4, 2 RBIs, HBP), Dalton Bargo (0-for-3, run, 2 walks), and Brayden Fraasman (1-for-4, run, RBI, walk) all contributed to the lineup's depth.

On the mound, Heath Andrews had a tough-luck start. Over 4.2 innings, he allowed six earned runs on eight hits and five walks, but he induced plenty of weak contact—Miami just kept finding gaps. His one clear mistake came in the second inning, when he left a fastball over the heart of the plate to former Wolfpack catcher Alex Sosa, who launched it off the scoreboard for a three-run homer. Ryder Garino provided 4.0 innings of relief, striking out six while allowing six earned runs on seven hits and one walk. He cruised through his first 2.1 frames but ran into trouble in the seventh, surrendering three straight singles that set the stage for Miami's comeback.

For NC State, this series win wasn't just about the standings—it was a statement. The Wolfpack showed they can battle back from adversity, and with their RPI surging, they've given themselves a fighting chance at an at-large bid. Now, it's all about finishing strong in ACC play.
