At this year's Upfronts, the contrast between Fox and NBCUniversal couldn't have been starker—especially for sports fans. While NBC seemed to sideline its athletic stars, Fox put sports front and center, making it the undeniable highlight of their presentation.

Fox's event was practically a sports fan's dream. Tom Brady took on emcee duties, joined on stage by a who's who of legends: Rob Gronkowski, Jameis Winston, Michael Strahan, David Jeter, David Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez, and Erin Andrews. The network even used the moment to reveal the Thanksgiving Day showdown—the Philadelphia Eagles versus the Dallas Cowboys. It was a masterclass in leveraging star power to build anticipation for the season ahead.

NBCUniversal's approach at Radio City Music Hall, however, felt like a missed opportunity. For the first 90 minutes, sports were barely mentioned. It wasn't until late in the show that personalities like Mike Tirico, Bob Costas, and new NFL commentator Mike Tomlin took the stage. There were brief nods to sports—like a mention of controlling Sunday nights through NFL, NBA, and MLB broadcasts—but it was a far cry from last year's full-court press. Andres Cantor did hype Univision's World Cup coverage with his iconic "gooooool" shout, but the overall focus leaned heavily on reality TV and new scripted shows. In fact, NBCU's post-event release highlighted 24 personalities—none of them from sports.

This is a notable shift for NBC, which last year used its Upfront to announce Michael Jordan's involvement in the NBA's return. The company also heavily promoted a February lineup packed with the Winter Olympics, the Super Bowl, and the NBA All-Star Game. This year, sports took a backseat, leaving many to wonder why.

As sports continue to dominate viewership and ad revenue, the way media companies prioritize them in their pitches matters more than ever. Fox clearly understands this, making sports the main event. NBC, on the other hand, seems to have treated them as an afterthought—a risky move in a landscape where athletic content is king.
