NBA star weighs in on latest loss: ‘If we were in Serbia, we would all get fired’

Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic wasn't holding back after his team's latest playoff loss.

Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic didn't mince words after his team's latest playoff disappointment, offering a brutally honest assessment that resonated far beyond the basketball court. Following a 110-98 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves that ended their first-round series 4-2, the three-time MVP was asked about potential changes for the franchise. His response? "That's not my decision, to be honest. Definitely if we were in Serbia, we would all get fired."

For Jokic, a native of Serbia and one of the NBA's most decorated players with eight All-Star selections, the frustration was palpable. The Nuggets, who captured the NBA championship in 2023, have now suffered back-to-back second-round exits in 2024 and 2025, followed by this year's first-round elimination. "I mean, we just lost in the first round, so I think we are far away" from competing for another title, he said, his disappointment evident.

The loss stings even more given Minnesota's depleted roster. The Timberwolves were without injured star Anthony Edwards and key role players Donte DiVincenzo, Ayo Dosunmu, and Kyle Anderson, making the defeat particularly hard to swallow for Denver. When pressed about his level of disappointment, Jokic simply repeated, "I'm disappointed, I'm disappointed."

At 31 years old, Jokic remains under contract for two more seasons at $121.9 million, with a player option for the second year. But as the Nuggets face an uncertain offseason, his comments serve as a stark reminder that in the high-stakes world of professional basketball, patience has its limits—even for a franchise that recently tasted championship glory.
