In a revealing moment on the "Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul" podcast, super agent Rich Paul dropped a bombshell about how LeBron James' popularity—or lack thereof—among NBA players has directly impacted his business. Paul, who founded Klutch Sports Group over a decade ago, claimed that some players' "disdain" for the Lakers superstar has cost his agency clients.
"I've had NBA current players, and former players, involve themselves in a recruiting process with a kid — it's not their son — and purposely push a kid to a different agency because of their disdain for LeBron, and I'm his guy," Paul explained. "So, I know what happens."
The conversation started with a discussion about the NBA playoffs and how the media and players talk about postseason losses. Paul pointed out a double standard: while Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets faced relatively mild criticism after their playoff loss to the Timberwolves, LeBron James would have been roasted under similar circumstances.
"The reason why you don't hear a lot of conversation about Jokic is because I don't believe people are happy to see Jokic lose," Paul said. "But when LeBron loses, people are happy to see him lose. Especially his peers. Guys that played in the league that have platforms today. For different reasons, it's extra. They are happy to see him lose. For whatever reason. That's just how I feel, and I think it's true."
When pressed on why James is so polarizing among his fellow players, Paul suggested it goes deeper than simple jealousy of the future Hall of Famer's success. "I just think that in our community, it makes you feel better when someone else has a thing of detriment placed upon them because of what you lack and what you always wanted," he said. "That's the DNA of our communities. We're born into that. An athlete is not an exception."
Paul clarified that he welcomes fair critique, but what James faces goes beyond that. It's a stark reminder that even in the world of elite basketball, personal feelings can ripple through the business side of the game—from the court all the way to the agency offices. For fans and aspiring athletes, it's a fascinating look at how off-court dynamics can shape careers in ways you might never expect.
