NBA Insider reveals Luka Doncic reason Lakers could lose Giannis Antetokounmpo trade sweepstakes

The Los Angeles Lakers' star point guard will be to blame if the franchise fails to land a 10-time All-Star forward this summer.

The Los Angeles Lakers are already at the center of offseason trade rumors, and this year, the biggest name on the board is Giannis Antetokounmpo. But according to a new report, the Lakers' chances of landing the 10-time All-Star might hinge on one unexpected factor: Luka Dončić.

After a tough 115-110 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder that ended their playoff run with a 4-0 second-round sweep, the Lakers are now looking ahead to a pivotal summer. For weeks, whispers have linked the Bucks' superstar forward to Los Angeles. However, NBA insiders Dan Woike and Sam Amick of The Athletic suggest that Dončić's loyalty to his backcourt partner could block the path to a blockbuster deal.

According to league sources, Dončić has made it clear to the Lakers front office that he wants to continue playing alongside Austin Reaves. The two have developed a close friendship on and off the court, and Dončić reportedly believes Reaves is a long-term piece worth keeping. In fact, sources say Dončić has told the organization he would not want Reaves included in any trade package for Antetokounmpo.

That's a major hurdle. In today's NBA, landing a superstar of Giannis's caliber almost always requires parting with a young, productive player like Reaves—plus additional assets. Reaves, who averaged 23.3 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.7 rebounds this season while shooting 49% from the field, would be an ideal rebuilding piece for the Bucks. He's proven he can thrive in high-pressure playoff environments and could step into a primary scoring role in Milwaukee.

But Dončić's stance is clear: he wants a team built around him and Reaves, with whatever other star the Lakers can bring in. That leaves the front office with a tough decision—commit to their franchise guard's vision, or risk alienating him to chase the two-time MVP.

As the summer trade talks heat up, all eyes will be on how the Lakers navigate this delicate balance. One thing is certain: this isn't just about Giannis anymore. It's about what kind of team Luka Dončić truly wants to lead.
