The Detroit Tigers have made a strategic move to shore up their infield depth, reacquiring veteran infielder Zack Short from the Washington Nationals in a trade finalized Friday. The 30-year-old shortstop, who briefly suited up for the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings, is headed back to the Tigers' organization and will report to Triple-A Toledo.
Short's journey comes full circle—he originally made his MLB debut with the Tigers on April 21, 2021. Now, he returns to a familiar clubhouse, where manager A.J. Hinch warmly welcomed him back before Friday's series opener against the Texas Rangers at Comerica Park. "I talked to him and welcomed him back," Hinch said. "We'll see how we figure out the roster and whether he's an option."
The timing couldn't be more critical. Over the past two weeks, the Tigers have seen their shortstop depth take a hit. Zach McKinstry landed on the injured list April 16 with left hip/abdominal inflammation, and Javier Báez followed on April 29 with a right ankle sprain. Those injuries left Kevin McGonigle as the only healthy shortstop on the active roster, prompting the front office to act quickly.
"We acquired him given what we've gone through the last week," Hinch explained, referencing Báez's injury. "We know we can trust him. We love him as a teammate."
In 2026, Short appeared in 21 games for Triple-A Rochester, batting .200 with one home run, eight walks, and 17 strikeouts. He logged all 155⅓ innings at shortstop, his primary position. But his versatility is a major asset—throughout his professional career, which includes 241 MLB games, Short has also played second base, third base, center field, left field, and right field.
In a related roster move, pitcher Shawn Dubin signed with the Nationals and has been assigned to Rochester.
For the Tigers, this trade adds a reliable, experienced glove to the mix as they navigate a crucial stretch of the season. For fans, it's a reminder that in baseball, depth and adaptability often make the difference between a winning streak and a slide.
