National League West report: Pitching injuries & roster shakeups

The National League West has been anything but quiet this week, with a flurry of pitching injuries and roster moves shaking up the division. While the top teams battle for supremacy, the middle of the pack is scrambling to find its footing—and that means big changes for some familiar faces.

First, the injury bug hit hard. San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb, who led the National League in innings pitched for three straight seasons (and topped the majors in 2023 and 2025), landed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with right knee bursitis. That’s a tough blow for a pitcher who’s been a workhorse for the Giants. Meanwhile, across the division, the Los Angeles Dodgers got a boost when Blake Snell returned to the rotation—but his comeback was rushed by one start, and he looked rusty in his first outing back. The reason? Another All-Star, Tyler Glasnow, was placed on the IL with back spasms, forcing Snell into action a bit early. For Dodgers fans, it’s a reminder that even the deepest rotations can feel the strain.

The Giants, meanwhile, are in a tough spot. They’re dead last in the majors in runs scored (just 3.25 per game) and 29th in wRC+ (83), a stat that measures offensive production. But they’re making moves with an eye on the future. Last Monday, they called up 21-year-old slugger Bryce Eldridge, a consensus top-50 prospect. He started five games at designated hitter and hit his first major league home run on Saturday—though the Giants lost that game by 10 runs. It’s a small bright spot in a rough season.

Then came the big move: on Saturday, the Giants traded starting catcher Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Guardians. In return, they got pitcher Matt Wilkinson (nicknamed "Tugboat"—and yes, that’s as fun as it sounds) and the 29th overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. Bailey is a two-time Gold Glove winner, a defensive wizard behind the plate. But his bat has been a different story: he’s a career .224/.282/.329 hitter with a 72 wRC+, and this season he’s managed just .146/.213/.183. Still, Giants fans won’t forget his one home run this year—a three-run bomb off Jack Dreyer to beat the Dodgers on April 22—or his walk-off grand slam last September off Tanner Scott. It’s a bittersweet farewell for a player who delivered some memorable moments.

Over in Arizona, the Diamondbacks made a tough call on Friday, designating center fielder Alek Thomas for assignment. Thomas is known for his rangy defense, but his bat has been a liability: he hit just .181/.222/.340 with a 53 wRC+ in 100 plate appearances this season, and his career on-base percentage sits at .273 over five major league seasons. The move opens up playing time for younger options, as the D-backs look to shake things up.

As the season heats up, the NL West is proving that every roster decision matters—whether it’s a star pitcher on the mend, a top prospect getting his shot, or a fan favorite heading to a new team. Stay tuned, because this division is far from settled.
