The National League Central is living up to its reputation as the most unpredictable division in baseball, and MLB expert Will Leitch has officially labeled it "chaotic." For good reason—every single team in the division is currently above .500, a rare feat that has fans and analysts alike watching closely.
At the top, the Chicago Cubs (24-12) hold a 2.5-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals, but the story goes much deeper. The Cardinals were expected to be in a retooling phase this season, yet they’ve emerged as one of the biggest surprises. Outfielder Jordan Walker is putting together an All-Star-caliber campaign, hitting .308 with a .961 OPS, while right-hander Michael McGreevy has been a steady force on the mound, posting a 2.52 ERA over seven starts.
The Pittsburgh Pirates (19-17) are also making noise, sitting just five games back. Their offseason spending is already paying dividends, especially with outfielder/first baseman Ryan O’Hearn, who is hitting .301 with an .848 OPS and five home runs in 34 games. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds (20-16) have found a gem in rookie infielder Sal Stewart, who ranks in the top 10 for home runs with nine and boasts an .831 OPS. However, the Reds face a challenge after losing closer Emilio Pagán to injury in Tuesday night’s game.
Leitch ranked the NL Central as the third-most chaotic division in MLB with a score of 7 out of 10, noting that the success of the Pirates and Cardinals is driving the chaos. "The Pirates haven’t had a winning record since 2018 or won a playoff series since 1979," Leitch wrote. "And the Cardinals were explicitly entering a rebuild, trading away just about every recognizable name. Some of these teams will fall off as the season goes along—right? Right?—but as of now, the usually nondescript NL Central simply will not stop winning."
