Nathan MacKinnon has always been known for his blazing speed and lethal scoring touch, but in Game 2, he showed he can deliver bone-crushing hits, too. The Colorado Avalanche superstar threw his weight around in the third period, leveling Minnesota's Quinn Hughes and Matt Boldy, while also tallying a goal and two assists to lead his team to a 5-2 victory and a commanding 2-0 series lead.
"Just excited to play," said MacKinnon, who led the league with 53 goals in the regular season. "Playoff hockey is obviously the best time of year. Just trying to have a good start."
MacKinnon's performance was nothing short of historic. With his third straight three-point playoff game, he joined an elite group that includes Leon Draisaitl (2022), Mikko Rantanen (2025), Joe Pavelski (2010), Joe Sakic (1997), and Dennis Maruk (1986) — a testament to his dominance on the biggest stage.
"He was unbelievable tonight on both sides of the puck," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. "The physicality, the defending details, the hunger to check pucks back in all three zones, and the speed and pace he played with early — it was like he was shot out of a cannon."
Captain Gabriel Landeskog echoed that sentiment, praising MacKinnon's all-around game. "Having Nate makes my job a lot easier. He's our driving force offensively, and lately, defensively, he's been a beast as well."
MacKinnon's two hits were the talk of the night. The first sent Hughes, one of the league's top defensemen, crashing to the ice, while the second drove Boldy hard into the boards. But true to form, MacKinnon downplayed the physicality. "It wasn't that big of a hit," he said of the Hughes collision. "He's one of the best players in the world and so hard to contain. You're just trying to do your best."
With the Wild heading home for Game 3 on Saturday, they'll need to find answers — and quickly — against a MacKinnon-led Avalanche team that's firing on all cylinders.
