Ake has not played regularly for Man City in the last two seasons

Netherlands star faces uncertainty over FIFA World Cup squad spot this summer

Ex Bournemouth man approaching final year of contract at the Etihad Stadium

Nathan Ake is set to leave Manchester City in the upcoming transfer window, as per a new report.

The 31-year-old is approaching the final year of his current deal at the Etihad Stadium and has struggled for minutes and fitness in the last two seasons.

Ake has won four Premier League titles and a historic treble since joining forces with Pep Guardiola from Bournemouth in 2020, having played a vital role en route to City’s maiden UEFA Champions League crown in 2023 in particular.

However, the Netherlands international has been unreliable from a fitness standpoint in recent seasons and with Manchester City boasting new depth in defence, Ake’s future is expected to be resolved this summer.

As reported by Sam Lee of The Athletic, Ake is expected to leave Manchester City at the end of the season as the Blues progress their rebuild of Guardiola’s first-team ranks.

The Dutchman attracted interest in January following a series of public calls from his international manager Ronald Koeman to improve his game time to stake a claim for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Guardiola remains a big fan of Ake, who played a starring role in Manchester City’s Carabao Cup final win over Arsenal at Wembley in March and also started alongside John Stones in last week’s FA Cup semi-final comeback win over Southampton.

It remains to be seen where Ake could end up as the centre-half will have no dearth of suitors in the upcoming transfer window – which is expected to be as busy as the 2025 summer window when Hugo Viana replaced Txiki Begiristain as Manchester City’s sporting director.

Bernardo Silva has confirmed he will leave City when his contract expires in June, bringing the curtain down on a decorated, nine-year spell at the Etihad Stadium.

Stones is also expected to announce his departure from the club in the coming days as he marks a decade under Guardiola, approaching the end of his own deal in June.

Jack Grealish, Manuel Akanji and Kalvin Phillips will finish their respective loans at Everton, Inter Milan and Sheffield United in the summer and are all expected to leave City permanently subsequently.

James Trafford will also get his desired move as things stand. City are negotiating new deals with Phil Foden and Rodri – and are likely to receive offers for the likes of Rico Lewis, Savinho, Omar Marmoush and Nico Gonzalez.
