The NBA's playoff stage is set, and the list of 36 officials selected for the play-in tournament and first round includes a historic name: Natalie Sago. With this assignment, Sago becomes just the third woman ever to referee an NBA postseason game, joining pioneers Violet Palmer and Ashley Moyer-Gleich.

The news came as a thrilling surprise. Sago, a veteran of over 400 regular-season games, was at the Salt Lake City airport when she received the call from NBA executive Albert Sanders. Her first thought? "Oh boy, here we go. Did we screw something up in the game last night?" The call, however, was to deliver the career-defining news she had worked towards for years.

Earning a playoff assignment is a major achievement, as less than half of the league's referees are selected each season. Sago and Moyer-Gleich broke ground together in 2018 as the fourth and fifth women promoted to the NBA's full-time staff, paving the way for more to follow. Their selections are based on rigorous season-long evaluations of performance, accuracy, and rankings.

Monty McCutchen, the NBA's Vice President of Referee Development and Training, emphasized the core principle: "When you’re on a high wire with no net under you... you don’t really care what gender they are. What you care about is whether they’ve been trained properly, and whether you can trust that they will be there for you."

For Sago, the honor carries profound weight. "I couldn’t be more excited and ready to just put on a performance for the other women coming behind me and all the young little girls that are going to be watching the playoffs," she said. As she steps onto the court for her first playoff assignment, she's not just officiating a game—she's inspiring the next generation and solidifying her place in the league's history.
