The Nashville Predators' playoff destiny is now out of their hands. A costly 3-2 home loss to the San Jose Sharks on Monday has pushed their postseason hopes to the absolute brink, leaving them in a desperate must-win-and-get-help scenario for the final game of the regular season.
Luke Evangelista provided the offensive spark for the Predators, scoring twice in the third period to twice bring Nashville within a goal. His second, a slick bardown finish for his 11th of the season, gave the Bridgestone Arena crowd late life. However, the rally fell short against a Sharks team playing the spoiler role to perfection.
San Jose built its lead on special teams and a critical turnover. A power-play goal from Igor Chernyshov in the second period broke the ice. Then, in the third, a disputed icing call and a subsequent Nashville turnover led directly to Macklin Celebrini's 43rd goal of the season, giving the Sharks a crucial two-goal cushion. Celebrini would add an empty-netter to seal the victory.
For the Predators, the loss snaps a two-game win streak and halts the momentum they had built with backup Justus Annunen, who made 20 saves. More historically, it marks San Jose's first win over Nashville in nearly five years and their first victory in Music City since 2018.
Now at 86 points, Nashville's path to the playoffs is razor-thin. Their fate hinges on the Los Angeles Kings losing their final game in any fashion. If that happens, the Predators would then need to defeat the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday to potentially force their way in. Otherwise, a second consecutive season will end without a playoff berth, setting the stage for a pivotal offseason in Smashville.
