Ecuador's Jhonatan Narvaez delivered a masterclass in teamwork and timing to claim his second stage win of the 2026 Giro d'Italia on Stage 8, powering through a grueling uphill finale to hold off Norway's Andreas Leknessund.
The 156-kilometer stage from Naples to the summit finish saw Narvaez part of a three-man breakaway alongside his UAE Emirates-XRG teammate Mikkel Bjerg and Uno-X Mobility's Leknessund. With about 10.5 kilometers remaining, Narvaez made his decisive move, and Bjerg—having done crucial work to set up his teammate—dropped back. Leknessund couldn't match the Ecuadorian's pace, as the final few kilometers climbed relentlessly upward.
"It was a nice stage for me. I think we played well with my teammate—Mikkel Bjerg was the man of the day," said Narvaez, who previously won Stage 4. The victory marks his second in this year's race, cementing his reputation as a versatile threat in the peloton.
Leknessund crossed the line 32 seconds behind, taking second place with grace. "Narvaez was stronger in the end, kind of as expected," he admitted, acknowledging the winner's superior form on the climb.
In the general classification, Portugal's Afonso Eulalio retained the leader's pink jersey, holding a commanding lead of three minutes and 15 seconds over two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark. Eulalio's Bahrain-Victorious squad has controlled the race admirably, but with Vingegaard lurking and the high mountains still to come, the battle for pink is far from over.
