Napoli have confirmed they will permanently sign Rasmus Højlund from Manchester United this summer, triggering a release clause in the Danish striker's contract after an impressive loan spell in Serie A

In a major development that has sent ripples through the football world, Napoli have officially confirmed they will make Rasmus Højlund's loan move permanent this summer, activating the £38 million (€51.4 million) release clause in the Danish striker's contract.

The 23-year-old forward, who joined Manchester United from Atalanta for a hefty £72 million in 2023, struggled to live up to expectations at Old Trafford. With just 26 goals in 95 appearances across all competitions, United opted to cut their losses and send Højlund to Napoli on a season-long loan last summer, hoping a change of scenery would reignite his career.

That gamble has paid off handsomely. Under the guidance of Antonio Conte, Højlund has rediscovered his scoring touch, netting 11 times in 30 Serie A appearances. His resurgence has been a key factor in Napoli's push for Champions League qualification, with the club currently sitting second in the table behind Inter Milan.

While the permanent transfer is contingent on Napoli securing a top-four finish, sporting director Giovanni Manna has left no room for doubt. "There are no doubts. Rasmus will stay here," Manna stated. "We have an obligation to buy from Manchester United in case of Champions League access, but he is in our plans regardless of this condition."

The move has sparked debate among Manchester United legends. Peter Schmeichel, a goalkeeping icon for the Red Devils, expressed his disappointment on 'The Good, The Bad and The Football' podcast. "A bit of a shame because I like Højlund by the way and think he could have been absolutely fantastic. But I don't think he wants to come back," Schmeichel said.

His former teammate Nicky Butt was more pointed in his criticism of United's handling of the young striker. "What they did with Højlund was wrong because they brought a young boy in who's not got any Premier League experience and asked him to carry Manchester United," Butt explained. "I'm scared they're going to do that with (Benjamin) Sesko."

For Højlund, this permanent move represents a chance to build on his Serie A success and establish himself as one of Europe's most promising forwards. For Manchester United, it's another chapter in their ongoing rebuild, as they look to move on from high-profile signings that didn't quite hit the mark.
