Murashov's 24-Save Shutout Gives Penguins 1-0 Lead in Atlantic Division Finals

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins beat the Springfield Thunderbirds 2-0 in Game One of the Atlantic Division Finals.

In a thrilling start to the Atlantic Division Finals, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins seized a 1-0 series lead with a commanding 2-0 shutout victory over the Springfield Thunderbirds. The Penguins came out firing, controlling the pace early and setting the tone for a defensive battle that would keep fans on the edge of their seats.

The first period saw Wilkes-Barre/Scranton jump out to an early attack, putting five of the first seven shots on net within the opening 11 minutes. But Springfield quickly adjusted, outshooting the Penguins 7-2 for the remainder of the frame—including three shots during a power play. Despite the Thunderbirds' push, the score remained deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the first intermission.

The Penguins carried that momentum into the second period, once again dominating the early action. At the 11:34 mark, a Springfield turnover forced by Atley Calvert set the stage for forward Bill Zonnon, who deked past Thunderbirds goalie Georgi Romanov to bury the game-winner and give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 1-0 lead. Springfield responded with a 6-2 shot advantage for the rest of the period, but the Penguins' defense held firm, keeping the one-goal lead intact through 40 minutes.

The final period brought a moment of brilliance from Penguins forward Tanner Howe. At 7:19, Howe stripped the puck from Thunderbirds defenseman Adam Jiricek in the Penguins' zone, then raced down the ice on a breakaway and slid the puck past Romanov to double the lead to 2-0. From there, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton clamped down defensively, limiting Springfield to just five shots the rest of the way and snuffing out any chance of a comeback.

Penguins goaltender and AHL All-Star Sergei Murashov was the star of the night, turning aside all 24 shots he faced to record a shutout that will be remembered by Penguins fans for seasons to come. On the other end, Romanov put up a solid effort with 23 saves on 25 shots, finishing with a .920 save percentage, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Penguins' relentless attack and defensive discipline.

With Game One in the books, the Penguins have set the stage for an intense series. Can they keep the momentum rolling, or will the Thunderbirds find a way to bounce back? Either way, hockey fans are in for a treat.
