When you watch Joel Embiid take the court these days, it's clear the reigning MVP isn't moving at full speed. Battling through hip and ankle injuries while recovering from an April 9 appendectomy, the Philadelphia 76ers' big man is giving everything he has to help his team in their playoff push against the New York Knicks.
In Friday's Game 3 loss, Embiid managed just 18 points on 7-for-17 shooting—a far cry from his usual dominance. He scored only 14 points on 3-for-11 shooting in Game 1 and sat out Game 2 entirely due to those nagging hip and ankle issues. Critics may question his toughness, but inside the locker room, there's no doubt about his commitment.
"It means everything," said teammate Paul George. "We know what he's going through. We know how tough it is on his body, and the work he's putting in to get prepared to try to come out and play. We appreciate it. I think the fans appreciate it. Philadelphia appreciates it. It means a lot to see 21 suited up and giving it a go."
The 2025-26 season has been another battle with adversity for Embiid, who was limited to just 38 regular-season games. While that's double his 2024-25 total, it's still been a grind for the big fella. Yet he continues to suit up for the Sixers and the city that cheers him on.
"It shows heart, shows that he wanted to be on the floor," added VJ Edgecombe. "Some things are unfortunate, obviously, with his body and injuries are unfortunate. Some things you can't control. It just shows his heart and his passion."
For a team fighting to stay alive in the playoffs, having a leader like Embiid willing to battle through pain is the kind of grit that defines champions—and the kind of determination that fans love to wear on their sleeves.
