From the familiar tracks of Mt. Zion to the bright lights of the Missouri Valley Conference, one Illinois State runner is proving that homegrown talent can go the distance.

Sophomore Julian Baker, a proud Mt. Zion native, is gearing up for the MVC Outdoor Championships this weekend in Terre Haute, and all eyes are on him after a breakout indoor season. Baker dominated the conference indoor championships, sweeping titles in both the 5000-meter and 3000-meter events. His performance has only gained momentum through the outdoor season, showcasing a knack for finding an extra burst of speed when others begin to fade.

Redbird Director of Track and Field Jeff Bozee sees even greater potential ahead. "Now it's a matter of him having the confidence to race against some of the best guys in the country, not just in the Missouri Valley," Bozee said. "There are plenty of talented runners in our conference, and he's learning how to race them. But the next step is carrying that success over to the rest of the NCAA. That's his development path."

For a young athlete already making strides, this weekend's competition—hosted by Indiana State on Saturday, May 16—is another chance to build on a promising foundation. Whether you're a fellow runner or just a fan of the sport, Baker's journey is a reminder that hard work and local roots can lead to something special on the national stage.
