Michigan State basketball is already generating serious buzz for the 2027 NCAA Tournament, and one of the most respected bracketologists in the game is buying into the hype. ESPN's Joe Lunardi has released his first projection for the tournament field, and the Spartans are positioned as a No. 2 seed in the South Region.

In this early look ahead, Lunardi has Michigan State opening against the winner of the No. 15 seeds Queens and Austin Peay in the first round. The Spartans are slotted into the Pittsburgh pod, where they'd potentially face No. 7 seed Miami (FL) or a pair of No. 10 seeds in Iowa and Baylor. For Michigan State fans, it's no surprise to see Duke sitting atop the region as the No. 1 seed—a familiar postseason rival for the Spartans.

The high seed aligns with widespread expectations for Tom Izzo's squad. Michigan State has been projected as a preseason top-10 team by multiple outlets, with some analysts even ranking the Spartans as the No. 1 team in the nation heading into the offseason. Lunardi's projection simply reinforces what many already believe: this team has the talent and depth to make a deep tournament run.

Among Big Ten programs, only Michigan (No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region) and Illinois (No. 1 seed in the West Region) received higher seeds than the Spartans. The conference is well-represented in Lunardi's expanded 76-team field, with 12 Big Ten teams making the cut. For Spartans fans, the early projection is a promising sign that the program is reloading for another championship-caliber season.
