An in-state defensive back target for the Spartans has reportedly set his commitment date

Michigan State football fans, mark your calendars—an exciting in-state defensive back target has officially set his commitment date. Darryl Flemister, a three-star safety from Detroit, plans to announce his college decision on July 4, according to a report from 247Sports' Corey Robinson.

Flemister, who plays for Detroit King High School, is rated as an 86 overall recruit in the 247Sports system. He's currently ranked as the No. 104 safety in the nation and the No. 18 prospect from Michigan in the 2027 class. That's serious potential for a young player still early in his high school career.

The Spartans have been in this race for a while—they extended an offer to Flemister back in October 2023, and according to Robinson, they remain "firmly in the mix." That's no small feat, given the competition. Flemister holds notable offers from powerhouse programs like Wisconsin, Auburn, Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, and many more. It's a crowded field, but MSU's early investment could pay off.

Interestingly, 247Sports currently shows only Wisconsin with an official visit lined up for Flemister. But with a July 4 decision date approaching, expect that list to grow quickly as other programs—including the Spartans—look to lock in their time with him before the big announcement.

For Michigan State fans, this is a recruitment to watch closely. Landing an in-state talent like Flemister would be a strong statement for the Spartans' future secondary. Stay tuned for updates as July 4 nears.
