The Orlando Magic have made a significant coaching change following their first-round playoff exit, parting ways with head coach Jamahl Mosley on Monday. The decision came just hours after the team suffered a devastating 116-94 Game 7 loss to the Detroit Pistons, who mounted an impressive comeback from a 3-1 series deficit to eliminate Orlando.
Jeff Weltman, the Magic's president of basketball operations, announced the dismissal, acknowledging Mosley's contributions while emphasizing the need for a new direction. "We're grateful to Jamahl for all he has done for the Orlando Magic," Weltman said in a statement. "We appreciate his leadership and the positive contributions he made as head coach. While this was a difficult decision, we feel it's time for a new voice and fresh perspective."
Mosley, 47, spent five seasons at the helm in Orlando, making him the longest-tenured Magic coach since Stan Van Gundy led the team to the 2009 NBA Finals. His journey to the top job included assistant coaching stints with the Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Dallas Mavericks before being hired in July 2021.
Under Mosley's guidance, the Magic posted a 189-221 overall record, including a solid 45-37 mark this season. The team showed steady progress, reaching the playoffs in each of the last three years—a notable achievement for a franchise that had endured nine postseason absences since its last series win in 2010. However, those playoff appearances ended in quick first-round exits, with the Magic failing to advance past the opening round seven times in that span.
For a team that has been searching for sustained success since its Finals run more than a decade ago, this move signals a commitment to breaking the cycle of early playoff exits. As the Magic look to build on their recent competitiveness, the search for a new head coach will be critical in shaping the next chapter for this young, promising roster.
