In a strategic move to avoid a heavyweight showdown of the scheduling kind, rising British star Moses Itauma has had his fight date shifted from July 25 to August 8. The change comes after it was announced that former two-time world champion Anthony Joshua will be making his 2025 ring return on the original July date, setting up a potential clash for fan attention that promoters wisely decided to sidestep.
Itauma, just 21 years old and boasting a perfect 14-0 professional record, has been one of the most exciting prospects in the heavyweight division. His stock soared in March with a dominant fifth-round knockout victory over Jermaine Franklin—a win that marked the first time he had been taken beyond the second round since 2023. That performance had fans and pundits alike eagerly awaiting his next outing, originally scheduled for the O2 Arena in London on July 25.
However, that prime slot has now been claimed by Joshua, who will face Kristian Prenga in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for his first fight of the year. Rather than go head-to-head for the boxing spotlight, promoter Frank Warren made the call to move Itauma's bout to August 8. "We could have gone head to head and all this. It is what it is. We'll just keep moving forward," Warren told the Ariel Helwani Show.
While an opponent for Itauma has yet to be confirmed, Warren hinted that negotiations are underway. "We're working on a couple of names, but until the contract is signed, I don't like to say anything," he added.
For Itauma, the delay is a minor hiccup in what has been a rapid ascent through the heavyweight ranks. Despite his youth, he has shown maturity and power beyond his years, and the extra two weeks of preparation could serve him well. Meanwhile, Joshua will look to build momentum against the little-known Prenga ahead of a potential blockbuster showdown with domestic rival Tyson Fury later this year.
For fans of the sweet science, August 8 can't come soon enough—another chapter in the story of one of boxing's most promising young heavyweights is about to be written.
