Manchester United are gearing up for a significant midfield overhaul this summer, with the club actively searching for a long-term successor to veteran Casemiro. The 34-year-old Brazilian's contract is winding down, and the Red Devils are preparing to inject fresh energy into the middle of the park.
Since caretaker manager Michael Carrick took the reins in January, young star Kobbie Mainoo has formed a formidable partnership with Casemiro. Now, United want a combative midfielder who can step into that role and complement Mainoo's game. Several Premier League-proven names have already surfaced on INEOS' radar—including Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, Brighton's Carlos Baleba, and Newcastle's Sandro Tonali.
But the club's scouting network hasn't stopped at domestic options. Among the foreign talents being evaluated is Sporting CP's Morten Hjulmand, a player who has been linked with Old Trafford since Ruben Amorim's tenure as head coach. The Danish international has been a midfield mainstay for Sporting since arriving from Lecce in 2023, and he was handed the captain's armband just a year later—a testament to his growing influence.
Hjulmand was heavily tipped to follow Amorim to Manchester when the Portuguese coach took charge in November 2024, but the move never materialized. Despite Amorim's departure earlier this year, Hjulmand remains a strong candidate—and for good reason. This season, the 26-year-old has registered two goals and six assists in 43 appearances, all but one of them starts. His leadership qualities and defensive grit make him a natural fit to fill Casemiro's boots, both on the pitch and in the dressing room.
With the summer window approaching, all eyes are on whether United will finally secure the midfielder they've been tracking for months.
